Overview

White Marsh Recreation Council offers a softball program each spring (April to June) for girls in the 5-7, 8-10, 11-13 and 14-18 age divisions. Our program is designed to provide players with a fun-filled atmosphere while teaching each athlete good sportsmanship and fundamental skills necessary to play the game.

Girls in the 5-7 age bracket play in a clinic-type setting (coaches pitching) before moving up to the 8-10 league where the girls are introduced to "flat-pitch." This style helps to prepare the girls for the "modified fast-pitch" style of play (pitching as fast as one can, but no bunting or base stealing) that they will see in the 11-13 age bracket. Girls in the 14-18 age bracket play the full "fast-pitch" style with bunting and base stealing but are allowed to pitch "sling-shot"(underhand) if preferred.

For girls interested in a more competitive atmosphere, White Marsh also offers "Tournament" teams in several age brackets that play in several local tournaments throughout the season. We also sponsor several teams in various age brackets that play in "Travel" fast-pitch leagues during the summer and fall months.

All "in-house", Tournament and Travel teams will have the benefit of using our newly purchased pitching machine and hitting trainer. We also provide each team with high quality batting helmets, catching equipment and other necessary items.

Registration

Registration for White Marsh softball will be held on dates in February and location to be announced. See the flyer or contact the recreation office and check the Calendar for more information.

The age determination date is January 1 of the current year. The exception is that girls must be 5 years old by May 1 of the current year.

Location

Games are played at Joppa View Elementary School and Carney Elementary School. In-house teams in the 11-13 and 14-18 age divisions play several games against Perry Hall Recreation teams and may travel to their home fields. Teams in the 5-7 age divisions play one game per week on Saturday mornings. 8-10 teams play on Saturdays and Wednesdays, 11-13 teams play on Mondays and Wednesdays and 14-18 teams play on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Game times on Saturdays vary, but all weeknight games start at 6:00 pm.

Staff

The White Marsh softball coaching staff is an all-volunteer staff made up of a chairperson, age group coordinators and at least two coaches per team. Our coaches are very enthusiastic and talented and collectively have many years of coaching and playing experience. All of our coaches are dedicated parents as well, and each one takes an interest in seeing that every player is taught the necessary fundamental skills, has fun and plays to her ability. Official umpires are used for all games in the 11-13 and 14-18 age divisions. 8-10 games are umpired by paid junior umpires.

The chairperson administers the program, serving as the liaison with the recreation council, coaches, volunteers and participants.
